Anna Nezhnaya

Female demons, semi-demons and mythical creatures are the suppressed part of our civilization. In the works on view I appropriate and ruminate on such feminine archetypes. My visual work invents prototypical identities of womanhood and refers to female iconographies constructed throughout art history. I appropriate them through my personal artistic vision and the refined techniques I employ. Depicted with neon glass or in glossy, intense lacquer colors, my images originate in digital drawings. They conjure up a new reality shifting away from the pressures of our screen-based civilization. Yet they remain close and true to our marvelous addiction to the aesthetics of light and glass. Personally, I’m mesmerized by neon. My artistic explorations are an attempt to grasp why. I investigate the properties and qualities of neon as it appears to be an ultimate prototype of the screen, arrested in its basic feature. I love to represent this idea in the colorful fragility and perfection of fluorescent glass that illuminates its material and mental surroundings.
